Top two finish in the same order
International Master and former national championship challenger, Vikramaditya Kulkarni with all his grit and experience made a clean sweep of 7/7 to win the Accurate Springs Classical FIDE rating chess tournament which concluded at Russian Center, Peddar Road on Thursday 5th October 2023. It wasn't exactly a cakewalk for the IM as the final score lines may appear. Twice, in the fifth and seventh rounds, he was in a minus position, but he kept going and managed to come up triumphant in the end.
Amardeep Bartakke the second seed of the tournament, finished second. He kept his nerves as seeded players tumbled around, notably in the fifth round, when no less than eleven upsets in the top 31 boards were seen. All top three finishers were unbeaten throughout the event.
Arnav Kherdekar finished third. The seventh seed delivered an impressive performance and gained 61.2 Elo rating points.
In the remaining top 10 standings, 188th seeded, unrated Atharv Tikare stole the show by scalping five rated players - highest being 1560 and securing the sixth position to win ₹8000. His performance rating of 1540 was a reflection of this 17-year-old boy's strong game.
G Shivamshika with 5 points was declared the best female player of the tournament.
A total of ₹250000 was awarded to the prize winners along with 16 trophies to the age category winners. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹25000 and ₹20000 respectively. There were seven rounds in this classical Swiss league, one round played per day. The Tournament Director was IO FT FA Praful Zaveri of ICS.
While we have many run-of-the-mill tournaments across the country, what distinguishes this tournament organized by Indian Chess School is its quality standards. First, you have a full AC venue at a reasonable entry fee of ₹2500 and a smaller field of players. The other attraction is that the top 16 games are played on hi-tech DGT boards that relay the game to the server and the pgns (portable game notation) are available for the games for all to see. This is quite a desirable feature and only very high level like GM-norm tournaments in India can boast of offering that till now.
For all tournament-hungry young kids, look out next for the Grand Prix Chess series, four big Under 15 events coming up starting 15th November 2023 to 17 March 2023, brought to you by Indian Chess School. Event 1, 2, 3 and 4.
A total of 192 players including an IM took part from various parts of the country in this seven-day seven-round Swiss league Rating tournament which was organized by Indian Chess School at Russian Chess Academy in Mumbai, Maharashtra from 29th September to 5th October 2023. The time control for the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
