Tbilisi GP Round 2: Vaishali misses against Kosteniuk

by Shahid Ahmed - 17/08/2024

GM R Vaishali got herself a good position against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) in Round 2 of FIDE Tbilisi GP 2024. The former women's world champion provoked a knight sacrifice. Vaishali correctly found it. However, she did not follow through her attack. Instead, she opted for a draw by perpetual check. Another former women's world champion, GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) was in a slight trouble against GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO). The Georgia no.1 could not seize her small window of opportunity and it ended in a draw. Vaishali will face IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (ESP) in the third round. Round 3 starts today from 3 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST. Photo: FIDE/Anna Shtourman

Kosteniuk - Vaishali: 0.5-0.5

GM Vaishali R (2506) seized her opportunity to sacrifice her knight and further weaken her opponent, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk's (SUI, 2488) kingside when she provoked 29.g4

Position after 29...Nxe5

29...Nxe5! is exactly what Black needed to play 30.dxe5 Qxg4+ 31.Kf1 Qh3+ 32.Kg1 Qg4+ and the game ended in a draw via perpetual check. Instead, 31...Nh4 32.Qf2+ Kg8 would have given maintained Black's advantage and kept chances for a win.

Mariya - Nana

Position after 20.Nc3

GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO, 2506) could have stirred up trouble for GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR, 2508) by taking the d4-pawn 20...exd4 21.Nxd4 Nxd4 22.Rxd4 Qc5 23.Qe8+ Nf8 would have been better for Black than the text 20...e4 21.Ne5 Ndxe5 22.dxe5 Bg7 and the game meandered into a draw.
