13th London Chess Classic 2023 R8: Shreyas upsets Jules

14-year-old IM Shreyas Royal (ENG) continues his fantastic run at 13th London Chess Classic 2023. In the penultimate round, he managed to turn things around against GM Jules Moussard (ENG). The Frenchman is having difficulty converting his advantages into a win. This time, it was certainly not an easy one. The teenager pounced when the opportunity was presented to him. Andrei Volokitin (UKR) scored the only other win of the round, against Mateusz Bartel (POL). The standings at the top remains unchaged as Michael Adams (ENG) maintains his sole lead 5.5/8, followed by M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) and Gukesh at 5/8 each. Position after 41...Nf6

GM Jules Moussard (FRA, 2635) had a substantial advantage. However, it was not easy to figure out how to make progress. 41.Kd3 allowed his opponent, IM Shreyas Royal (ENG, 2438) to improve his knight's position 41...Nf6! White cannot take it as Rxg3+ will drop the queen. The game continued 42.Rg1 Ne4 43.Kc2 Qh7 44.Kb3 Bxh4 utilizing the relative pin by the rook on the g3-pawn. 45.Bc3 Nxg3 Black soon gained another pawn in ten more moves and went on to win the game eventually.
