13th London Chess Classic 2023 R1: Gukesh outplays Mateusz Bartel

D Gukesh started his 13th London Chess Classic 2023 with a victory over Poland no.3, GM Mateusz Bartel. The India no.5 outplayed the Pole, after the latter misplaced his knight at b6. Gukesh beautifully utilized it to his advantage and had no trouble converting it into a victory. The newly crowned World Senior 50+ champion - GM Michael Adams (ENG) was the only other victor of the first round. He defeated the Iran no.2 GM M Amin Tabatabaei. Gukesh will face the new England no.1, GM Nikita Vitiugov in the second round. It starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 7:30 p.m. IST. Position after 10...Nb6

10...Nb6 turned out to be a long-term positional mistake. Black had opportunities to rectify it by going Nc4 at some point to trade it for a bishop. However, he decided against it. D Gukesh (2720) played beautiful positional chess to win against GM Mateusz Bartel (POL, 2659).
