44th Chess Olympiad 2022 R10: Indian Women eye the Gold, Men fight for a medal
India 1 Women bounced back strong by absolutely dominating Kazakhstan with a resounding 3.5-0.5 victory. A win against USA in the final round earns them gold, while a draw will leave their fate on others' hands. In the Open section, India 2 drew with Uzbekistan 2-2 and Iran lost to India 1 by a minimum margin 1.5-2.5. Uzbekistan and Armenia shared the lead 17/20, followed by India 2, India 1 and USA at 16/20 each. India 1 and 2 would hope both the leaders lose their respective games and either of them win their respective matches to win the Gold. The final round in the Open sections are - Germany vs India 2, India vs USA and for the Women, they just need to best USA too. Round 11 starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. IST. Photo: Aditya Sur Roy
India dominates Kazakhstan to regain sole lead in the Women
India has the opportunity to shatter American dreams in both Open and Women sections. While Indian Women have the best chance for Gold, the second and third team have outside chances too for winning a medal. In the Open section, both India 1 and 2 must win against Germany and USA to keep their medal hopes alive and hope everything else just works out in their favor.
Open: India 2 - Uzbekistan: 2-2
Reigning World Rapid champion, Nodirbek Abdusattorov brought an end to D Gukesh's unbeaten run. Although Gukesh was winning for the better part of the game, still the Uzbek managed to persevere a tough position.
Gukesh - Abdusattorov
White already had a great advantage in the first 25 moves of the game. After 27...Rc8 it only magnified. 28.Qh5 is recommended by the computer, against which Black does not have any good defense. Eventually Gukesh blundered his knight in time pressure in an extremely complicated queen and knight vs queen and bishop endgame with both sides having connected passed pawns on opposite flank.
Praggnanandhaa - Sindarov
The endgame is winning for White, there is no doubt about it. However, White must execute the correct technique. Try to think like Praggnanandhaa and make sure Black cannot escape with a draw.
Iran - India 1: 3-1
Vidit Gujrathi scored his first win of the event against M Amin Tabatabaei.
Vidit - Tabatabaei
40.g6+ is completely winning here. The reason is 40...Kxg6 is met by 41.f3 which traps the rook. The only exfil left would be via Rg5 which means 41...Rg3+ 42.Kf2 Rg5 43.Rg4 and it's over. Vidit utilized the same idea by first going 40.f3. Black delayed taking the g-pawn. However, the outcome remained unchanged.
Narayanan - Daneshvar
S L Narayanan made his intentions clear early in the game by pushing his h-pawn to h6 on 17th move. Later his opponent made a positional mistake 35...Ne6 which allowed White to get substantial advantage 36.Qf3 Qc3 37.Nd7 Kg8 38.Qb7.
After a fantastic king manuever to a3 where it found its safe haven, Narayanan made a beautiful finish 82.g6.
Women: India 1 - Kazakhstan: 3.5-0.5
GM Koneru Humpy, IM Tania Sachdev and IM Bhakti Kulkarni completely dominated their opponents GM Zhansaya Abdumalik, WIM Xeniya Balabayeva and IM Guliskhan Nakhbayeva.
Tania - Xeniya
In an already winning position, Tania found a beautiful finish 25.Nxe6 fxe6 26.Rxe6 Kf7 27.Bxd5 Qxd5 28.Re7+ Kg6 29.Re5 Qf3 30.Rxb5 Rh5 31.h4 and Black resigned.
Netherlands - India 2: 1-3
Apart from WGM Vantika Agrawal, IM Padmini Rout, WGM Mary Ann Gomes and WGM Divya Deshmukh won their respective games to beat Netherlands.
India 3 - Sweden: 3-1
WGM Nandhidhaa P V and WIM Sahithi Varshini once again scored the wins to ensure the team beats Sweden and have an outside chance for a team medal.
