ECCC R5: Arjun Erigaisi becomes the second Indian and overall 16th to cross 2800

by Shahid Ahmed - 25/10/2024

Arjun Erigaisi defeated Dmitry Andreikin in Round 5 of 38th European Chess Club Cup 2024, to cross 2800 in live ratings. He became the second Indian after Vishy Anand and 16th player in the world to reach this elusive club. Arjun's present live rating is 2802.1. His exact rating will be known in November FIDE Rating list. His extremely impressive rise to the top is astonishing because he did not take the well-trodden path of playing only round-robin tournaments. Instead, he played a lot of open tournaments where the risk was much more compared to the reward. Vidit Gujrathi and Pentala Harikrishna won their respective games to power their team Novy Bor Chess Club to sole lead with a perfect 10/10. Round 6 starts today at 3 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. Novy Bor Chess Club emerges sole leader

Arjun Erigaisi won his match for Alkaloid and now just 3.2 Elo rating points away from becoming World no.2. His teammate, GM Aravindh Chithambaram missed a win against GM Nihal Sarin. Alkaloid ended up making a 3-3 draw against Turkish Airlines. Both of those teams are trailing the leader - Novy Bor Chess Club, along with C'Chartres Echecs by a full point at 9/10 each. In the Women's event, TAJFUN-ŠK Ljubljana suffered their first match loss against SuperChess Club by a minimum margin 1.5-2.5. SuperChess Club and Garuda Ajka BSK have now caught up with TAJFUN-ŠK Ljubljana at the top in a three-way lead 8/10 each.

Position after 37...Rxb5??

Capturing the b5-pawn 37...Rxb5?? proved to be a fatal mistake. Black needed to play 37...e3 to keep the game going. 38.Rc7+- Rg5 39.h4 Rg4 40.Rd8+ Rg8 41.Rdd7 and White won the game in the next few moves.

Nihal - Aravindh

Position after 20.e6

It is clear that the above position became extremely volatile after 19...Ng3 20.e6. Black took the pawn 20...fxe6 to prevent exf7+. The game continued 21.N5d4 Kh7 22.fxg3 e5 23.gxf4 Qf6 24.Kf1? exd4 25.Rxe8 Rxe8 26.Ng5+ Kh8 27.Nf7+ Kh7 28.Ng5+ Kh8 29.Nf7+ Kg8 30.Nxd6+ Kh7 31.Nxe8 Qxf4+ 32.Ke1 dxc3 33.Qe2 cxb2 34.Rb1

Position after 34.Rb1

Now 34...Qb4+ would have been winning for Black. Instead, Black played 34...Bd4 protecting the b2-pawn 35.Kd1 Bc6 36.Kc2 and the game ended in a draw.

Eljanov - Vidit

Position after 25.Ne3?

White's ambitious attack starting with 25.Ne3? did not work out the way he wanted g6 26.f5? Bxd4 27.fxe6 fxe6 28.Qg4?? was too much as White does not have sufficient pieces left to follow through the attack Bxa1 29.Qxe6+ Kh8 30.Rxa1 Nc5 and Black won as the bishop cannot be saved.

Chigaev - Harikrishna

Position after 23.b3?

Black was in complete control after 22...c4. Things became worse for White after 23.b3? It helped Black to create a passed pawn c3 24.e3 d4 25.e4 Qb7 and it all went downhill for White. Harikrishna, being an endgame expert, does not miss these opportunities to win.
